I recently was able to attend the Face & Body Midwest Spa Conference in Chicago, Il. It was also a part of America’s Beauty Show. I have been to smaller trade shows but this was by far the largest. It took place at the McCormick Place Conference Center. This trade show was the who’s who of the hair, spa and makeup world.
I got the chance to connect with new and exciting products which I can’t wait to bring into my beauty studio. One of the best purchases was the Kett Fixx Creme. It is a wax based creme foundation which makes it bulletproof! This is perfect for my upcoming wedding season to ensure the makeup I do lasts and lasts.
I also picked up some amazing new wax and implements to help soothe skin after waxing and skin treatments. I got to try out other new skin care products from Skin Script which is going to enhance my facial services.
One of the most rewarding parts of this trip was getting to reconnect with Michigan
Devawn and I
Makeup Academy which is where I went to learn about makeup. Devawn is the owner and has some really exciting programs coming up including essential and advanced artistry courses. They also have new options for financing your education so there’s no excuse!!!
Happy Monday Beauties! Boy oh boy it’s been a busy two weeks for me. There’s been a lot going on but I want to share with you my experiences at the Pro Artist Weekend put on by Makeup Forever.
First, if you’re unfamiliar with Makeup Forever you need to stop what you’re doing and check them out. They are one of my absolute favorite brands and their products continue to get better and better. One of the reasons you may not be as familiar with them is because there are only a handful of boutiques across the country. However their staple products can be found at your local Sephora.
My daughters and I
In an effort to expand brand awareness, they have put on pro artist weekends in cities that do not have a boutique. Of course nothing comes to Ohio so I decided to go to the one in Washington DC. I made it a mini family vacation. I was a tourist for a day and then it was time to get to work and take some classes.
Day 1 was free!! There were demos that were put on by seasoned artists. The first was for bridal makeup. It was great because I learned some techniques on making makeup last for a long time of course using Makeup Forever’s products. Next was the flawless foundation demo that was led by Mr. AJ Crimson. He is a phenomenal artist who also has his own collection of foundations. That class was great because I learned some things about texture and choosing the right products. Next up was a class geared towards editorial makeup and how to transform a look for multiple shots. It really showed me to have a story whenever I go into a shoot. The day wrapped up with AJ Crimson returning to talk about building your personal brand and how to get to where you want to be.
AJ Crimson speaking about his experiences
Day 2 was the hands on portion. It was very reasonble at $125 redeemable in product. I got my hands on some great products like the flash neutral pallet and a couple of lip pallets. The class I took was advanced and was geared for red carpet/special event makeup. I challenge myself now to pay attention to every detail because it all matters.
I love that Makeup Forever put these classes on. I’ve always been an advocate for the brand and I’m glad I got to connect with them on an artist level. They have classes coming up in a few other cities so hurry and register!!!
I’m so happy to start another week. Each new week is an opportunity to be great! My grandpa always told me that you should learn something new everyday. And well today I’m going to give you the run down on microbeads and how you can safely and effectively exfoliate your skin!
Last week, Illinois became the first state to place a ban on products that contain microbeads. These microbeads are found in many facial and body care products and they are made up of plastic. Well due to their small size, when they are washed down the drain they are missed by the filtration system and end up in our lakes, rivers, and oceans. Since they are so small, fish and other sea creatures often mistake them for fish eggs and eat them as food. Well this is extremely dangerous as these animals are ingesting toxins which in turn hurts the food supply.
Many large companies are looking at using alternative exfoliating sources. Here’s where my concern as an esthetician comes in. Many companies will use natural exfoliants like apricot and walnut shells. However I am totally against that. The problem is that mediums like apricot and walnut are uneven. They can be extremely damaging to the skin because you are not getting an even exfoliation. I have had clients whose skin was very rough due to scrubs that contained these ingredients. They are fine for other body parts but absolutely not for the face.
I have never been a proponent for scrubs for the face in the first place. I think the facial skin is so delicate and should be treated as such. However, if you absolutely must have a scrub for your face, use one that contains jojoba beads. The jojoba beads are even and spherical and jojoba is a great hydrator for your skin. I however prefer AHA and BHA exfoliants. My favorite exfoliators contain lactic, glycolic or salicylic acid depending on what skin issues you are trying to fix. Lactic and glycolic are great for bringing new skin to the surface while not drying your skin out. Salicylic is designed for more acneic skin. They dissolve the dead layer of skin to get fresh skin to come out and is the safest for the skin. Of course you should see an esthetician for a good enzyme facial to really help your skin be flawless!
If you currently have any products with microbeads in them, please properly dispose of it and replace those products with ones that are safer for our environment. Any questions comments or concerns/
First off, I owe you all a HUGE apology. I had some technical issues and that prevented me from being able to keep you posted on my adventures. So we have a ton of things to catch up on! For starters, this past weekend I went all the way to Chicago (it’s really not that far lol) for The Makeup Show. This is America’s largest PRO ONLY makeup event. It was so exciting to be in an environment of my peers who came from all over! If you ask my husband he will tell you that the night before I left I could hardly sleep since the excitement was building up. This was my first time attending!
Makeup for Mehron
I made sure to get there early and there was already a line of people ready to get access to the hottest brands. I went in with a game plan, or so I thought. When I reached the 5th floor of the Bridgeport Art Center I just didn’t know where to begin. I walked around to see the who’s who in the industry and introduce myself to brands that I wanted to familiarize myself with.
I had to act quickly though because Renny Vasquez was set to start his keynote at 10:30. He is such an inspirational makeup artist. He shared with us some of his techniques and

tricks. What really stood out to me were two things. First, singer Brandy created a surprise video giving him encouraging words. That spoke highly of his artistry. He also spoke of his industry mentors with powerhouse names like Sam Fine and James Vincent. But what spoke of his character is how he shed tears when he shared his journey starting out as a shampoo assistant and had been doing that job all the way up to last year. He gave all honor to God and it touched me in a way that no one really has. I almost cried. He is the Cinderella story of the makeup industry.
Me and Orlando Santiago
I then took classes on foundation and building your kit and even some bridal. These workshops challenged me to think of makeup more critically as more than just what colors to use. Orlando Santiago encouraged his students to think of how products will work with each other based on their chemistry makeup. I hadn’t much given it thought. He spoke of pitfalls to avoid and etc.
One of the greatest takeaways from the whole

event was the portfolio review at the end of the show. I felt awful because I didn’t even realize this would be offered so I didn’t have my printed portfolio. I had to pull together a digital one and pray for the best. Well I got advice from Danessa Myricks, Orlando Santiago and James Vincent. They could feel my passion and liked my work! They gave me tips on how to present my portfolio and gave me hope for my future. I left The Makeup Show Chicago floating on cloud 9!
Imagine that you’ve won a trip to a tropical island but you had to leave in the next few hours. Aside from getting your clothes and shoes together you have to figure out what of your beauty products you are going to take. This can be such a task with all the shadows and lipsticks and such that are out there. I mean it’s imperative that you have everything you need right??!! But let’s just say that you don’t have enough time to fully plan out your looks. This could be a huge issue! Or is it? Really there are only 6 things I really need when it comes to my makeup routine. Everything else is just an added bonus.
1. Facial Cleansing Wipes. It’s sticky and muggy on this island. The humidity alone will keep your skin moistened. I would use the face wipes in the morning and again at night to cleanse my skin of oil and makeup. This way you don’t run into any extra breakouts because who needs that on vacay? I’ve been using Almay oil free wipes.
2. Oil Free Moisturizer with SPF. Need I say more? It’s an absolute must have item. You can’t be outside in the sun with no protection. It greatly reduces your risk for skin cancer and besides the sun will quickly age your skin. Nobody wants to look older than they are. Pictured is the High Resolution Refill 3X by Lancome.
3. Concealer. A little goes a long way. Only use it where needed so you don’t have to later your face up with foundation. Plus you don’t want to have a cake face on the island! I swear by Milani’s Secret Cover Concealer which provides amazing coverage at an amazing price!
4. Eyebrow Pencil/Powder. Whichever one you use! Brows frame your face and so never leave home without them. I love Anastasia’s Brow Wiz but lately I’ve been using Chanel.
5. Black Eyeliner.I like to line my inner rims to give my eyes definition. If you smudge your liner you can also give yourself a smokey eye that’s quick and easy to do. I got this Stila liner in a makeup kit from Ulta not too long ago and I love it!
6. Mascara.Just like brows I never leave home without it. It’s amazing what having lashes can do for your eyes. Lancome’s Hypnose Drama mascara is great for pumping up those lashes.
Bonus: Ok because I totally forgot about this but a lipstick that can double as a blush. Besides everyone has a tube of lipstick already in her purse!
The weekend really seems to fly especially when you work it. This past weekend I was able to do makeup for 3 different women for 3 different boudoir sessions. If you’ve never had a boudoir session done you are missing out!!! They are a way to really make you look and feel great and of course sexy!
One of the things I love most about my job is that I get to help inner beauty radiate outward. There is no greater achievement for me than making my current client feel like a superstar. Some women have never been told how beautiful they truly are and that is tragic.
The greatest and most nerve racking moment in a MUA’s job is the “reveal”. You never know what kind of reaction you will get!! Each of my 3 clients were blown away! I may even have a wedding job to come out of it! This weekend ended on a high note and I believe I have impacted each of those ladies in a positive way and that ladies and gentlemen is why I love my job.
